Stockist Spotlight: Six Ten Hair Studio

In the world of candles, we are all too familiar with the struggle of committing to purchasing a candle online when you can't physically hold it in your hands and give it a few good sniffs. When placing an order on our website, our loyal customers rely solely on our product descriptions, reviews from past customers, and trusting their instincts when it comes to picking out their favorite everyday candle. Luckily for you, we don't make bad smelling candles!

However, thanks to the nearly 300 retailers throughout the United States that stock our candles, many of our customers are able to give those candles a test drive before taking one home! Without them, we are like a candle with no smell. And because we appreciate our retailers so very much, we wanted to create a segment focused on shining a light back on them!

Today, I'd like to introduce you to Six Ten Hair Studio, an adorable hair salon and boutique located in Pennsylvania, owned and operated by Ashley Thomas.  Ashley is passionate about creating a great experience for her customers, constantly learning new techniques and approaches to giving her clients the hair of their dreams, and creating an environment where like-minded individuals can come together to create something great!

1. When did you open the doors to Six Ten?
After much anticipation of our staff and clientele, in the middle of a snow storm, we opened in February of 2019.
2. When did you know you wanted to open a brick & mortar store?

I’ve always dreamt of having a salon on my own since I entered cosmetology school in 2007

3. How many years has Six Ten been in business?
We have been open nearly 2 and ½ years (being closed 4 months of that time due to the COVID Pandemic)

4. What are your top 3 favorite items to sell at Six Ten?

Any item from our luxury hair care lines, scrunchies and candles, duh!

5. What is your best selling Candelles candle that you carry?

Our guests can’t get enough of the Pomegranate Cider!

6. Do you have your own personal favorite Candelles scent?

Chai Tea, it’s like a hug of comfort!

7. What is the most fulfilling part of owning Six Ten?

I can’t choose just one, so I settled for two!

  1. Hearing how much the guests LOVE our salon atmosphere. We strive to give each guest a 5 star experience along with good conversation inside a cozy environment and it’s so great to hear when people tell us how much they enjoy it.
  2. Creating a positive environment for our team. Trying to break the mold in the hair industry and promoting a space where our team can thrive and create beautiful careers for themselves!

8. What are some of the things you look for in a brand when stocking a new line?
We look for companies who mirror ours. We try to carry other women owned companies (being from Pennsylvania is an added PLUS!) We also look for companies with a good moral compass and integrity since those are so important to our company!
9. Do you have any new projects in the works for the future of Six Ten?

We are currently busting out of our 1,200 square foot space and absolutely see an expansion in the future to add other services like massage and skincare, along with more space for our hair services to continue to grow!

10. Have there been unexpected lessons you've learned while running Six Ten?

There is a lid for every pot. I used to think I wanted to be a salon who wanted every single person in the world to sit in our chairs. The more I grow as a business person, the more I realize it is so important to know you cannot be for everyone and that is 100% okay.

11. What does an average day at Six Ten consist of for you?
I wear all the hats at Six Ten, hairstylist, leader, boss (yes, they are different things), accountant, IT department, Human Resources, cheerleader, therapist, maintenance lady. I have always been a great multitasker, but owning Six Ten has sharpened my skills for sure!
12. Do you host any community events or workshops at Six Ten?

We currently do not. We have held workshops in the past but with Covid closing us down, we needed to get back on our feet before we closed a day for an event!
13. What has been the most challenging part of owning your own brick & mortar store?
I would have to say, creating a work - life balance and learning to delegate! I am an over-worker by nature and when you have so many people you’re trying to please, it’s hard to practice self-care. We are getting there!

We are so very grateful for the opportunity to learn more about Ashley, and the drive behind Six Ten Hair Studio! Be sure to follow along with them on Instagram at @sixtenhairstudio.
