As a full-time artist I can honestly say that there's no place in my house that feels more like "home" than my studio. I love having this space that is fully dedicated to being creative; brainstorming new ideas, and making beautiful things come to life. No matter what your creative endeavor, from painting to writing, scrapbooking, or anything in between -- it's so refreshing to have a space in your home that you feel that you can thrive creatively!
Start by finding a spot in your home that you're able to occupy for creative projects. Having a creative space in your home doesn't necessarily mean a full on renovation of the guest bedroom to turn it into your craft room, it could simply mean designating the kitchen table to be a creative space after dinner time. Figure out what makes sense for you and your home and get to work making it your own personal creative sanctuary!
Give it a good cleaning! it's hard to be fully committed to a creative project when you're distracted by messes and clutter. Organize your space in a way that makes sense for you; this could mean adding in shelving or using a tray or cart to house your art and craft supplies. One thing I like to do is clean out my old Candelles jars** to hold pens, paintbrushes, or markers.
Decorate your space with things that inspire you. We all find inspiration in unique places and things, and I'm a big believer that we should surround yourselves with things that make us happy and spark our creativity. Hang some of your favorite art prints, keep a vase of flowers close by, if there's a poem or song that you love print out the lyrics and display them on the wall. The possibilities are endless, but the important thing here is that you're surrounded by things that inspire you.
Another thing I absolutely love to do is bring some of the outdoors in. Having plants and fresh flowers throughout my home, and especially in my creative space, is so important and absolutely helps to get the creative juices going. Maybe the pattern of a leaf, or the natural colors of a bouquet of flowers will spark an idea! There's so much inspiration to be found in natural things.
And last but certainly not least, light up some candles, turn on your favorite tunes, and get to making! I love this little ritual to get started on a creative project. Not only does the soft glow of a burning candle make me feel warm and fuzzy inside, but the fresh scents get me buzzing and excited to create! Lately my favorite candle to have in my workspace is DAYDREAM from the Necessity Collection! It's such a light, sweet scent and it puts me in such a good mood. Pair that with my favorite indie-acoustic playlist and I'm ready to dive in and paint all the things!
Having a little creative oasis in your home to work on your favorite projects and feel inspired is such a wonderful way to explore the bounds of your creativity and make new, beautiful things! I hope that these ideas help spark some inspiration in my fellow creatives, and I'd love to hear some of your ideas and tips for crafting a creative space! Comment below and let us know!
**PRO TIP: An easy way to clean out your old jars is to boil water in the teapot and pour into the jar to break up any remaining wax, then pour it out. Remove the label carefully using a razor blade, and then give your jar a good washing. Voila! A perfect recycled storage solution for art supplies!
